Begin in Exmouth, where turquoise waters, rugged coastal landscapes and the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef set the scene for adventure. Travel inland to the iconic station stays of Bullara and Cheela Plains, experiencing genuine outback hospitality, red-earth landscapes, natural swimming holes and vast open skies along the way.
Your journey culminates in the spectacular gorges of Karijini National Park, where ancient rock formations, crystal-clear pools and dramatic scenery await. Combining coastal wonders, station life and outback exploration, this itinerary showcases some of Western Australia’s most extraordinary and diverse landscapes.
Fly to Exmouth (Ningaloo)
Your journey begins on arrival in the beautiful Ningaloo region. Collect your 4WD hire car or campervan from Exmouth Airport and check in to your Exmouth accommodation. Grab some supplies in the village-style town centre for your 2 adventurous days ahead. Visit Charles Knife Canyon, Yardie Creek and the secluded beaches, snorkeling the famous Ningaloo Reef.
Exmouth to Bullara Station
An easy one-hour drive brings you to Bullara Station today. Follow the walking trails to Exmouth Gulf, meet the friendly station animals and return in time for happy hour at the Woolshed Bar. On your second day, head to Coral Bay for a choice of unforgettable experiences including quad bike tours, fishing and wildlife charters, or a Whale Shark tour during the season (April to June).
Bullara Station to Cheela Plains Station
After a casual Bullara breakfast at the Woolshed Café, continue to Cheela Plains Station for your next two days of outback exploring. On arrival, enjoy lunch at the Red Plains Café before heading out on a walking trail to witness an extraordinary Pilbara sunset across the plains. On your second day, follow the station’s 4WD trail, take a refreshing swim at Mussel Pool, birdwatch from a natural spring and marvel at ancient gorges such as ‘The Wall’. In the evening, enjoy a relaxed two-course dinner at the Red Plains Café, or if visiting on a Sunday, experience the popular Campfire Burger Night under the outback sky.
Cheela Plains Station to Karijini National Park
A short drive this morning brings you to the mining town of Tom Price, where you can join a fascinating mine tour before stocking up on supplies for your next two days exploring Karijini National Park. After checking into Karijini Eco Retreat, enjoy a refreshing afternoon swim at Fern Pool before dining under the stars at the Lodge Restaurant. The following day, choose from the many spectacular walks through Karijini’s ancient gorges, discover breathtaking lookouts and natural swimming holes, or experience the thrill of abseiling amongst the park’s dramatic rock formations. Don’t forget your bathers.
