From coastal cliffs and World Heritage landscapes to remote pastoral stations, hot springs and iconic outback landmarks, this itinerary combines authentic station life, spectacular scenery and unforgettable experiences both on and off the beaten track.
Perth to Kalbarri
Begin your journey along the Coral Coast Highway stopping for lunch in the coastal city of Geraldton before arriving at your accommodation in seaside Kalbarri. Visit the lookouts at the Skywalk and Nature’s window en route to Murchison House Station for a historic station tour with a homestead morning tea.
Kalbarri to Wooramel Station
An easy drive to Wooramel Station this morning, checking in with time to walk the river trail and soak the day away in their artesian hot springs. Next day, explore the World Heritage Shark Bay region.
Wooramel to Ningaloo (Warroora Station or Bullara Station)
After a casual Wooramel breakfast at the café, head to the Ningaloo coast where a choice of accommodation awaits. Warroora Station is a self-catered experience so a stop in Carnarvon for provisions before heading off is advised. Base here for Whaleshark tours from Coral Bay. Bullara Station offers catering and is a perfect base to explore the Exmouth Gulf and the Cape Range National Park.
Bullara Station to Cheela Plains Station
Today’s drive rewards you with your first glimpse of the magnificent Hamersley Ranges on the way to Cheela Plains Station. On arrival, grab a coffee and a scrumptious lunch, settle in for a spectacular sunset, then watch as the night sky comes to life.
The next day, pick up a map from reception and explore the station’s gorge network on the 4×4 Self-Drive Safari, which takes a minimum of three hours return. Along the way, learn about the geological history of the magnificent rock formations. Fees apply.
After a day out in the bush, finish with a delicious meal at the Red Plains Café. Bookings are essential.
Cheela Plains Station to Mount Augustus Tourist Park
The journey from Cheela Plains to Mt Augustus is arguably one of outback Australia’s best-kept secrets, but you must be well prepared. This is a 350 km, seven-hour trip on gravel roads that passes through two shires, so be sure to check road conditions with the Shire of Ashburton and the Shire of Upper Gascoyne.
Ensure your tyres are in excellent condition, travel with two spares, and carry plenty of water and food in case you break down and need to wait for assistance.
Mount Augustus to Melangata Station
Wake early to view the changing colours of Mt Augustus at sunrise before a hearty breakfast and an adventure outback drive through the Murchison to Melangata Station and its Monsignor Hawes, heritage-listed homestead. Join a sunset station tour and taste genuine damper made on the campfire before joining your fellow guests for a rustic homestead dinner. Next day, join the homestead tour and explore historic Yalgoo, one of the best wildflower locations in season.
