Kimberley Station Stay Escape

Journey through the Kimberley’s rugged landscapes and remote station stays

7 DAYS
6 NIGHTS

From working cattle stations and ancient ranges to hidden swimming holes and spectacular gorges, this seven day adventure takes you into the heart of one of Western Australia’s most remarkable regions. Travel the legendary Gibb River Road and experience three unique station stays along the way, with plenty of time to slow down, explore and experience life in the Kimberley.

Your Kimberley adventure begins in the coastal town of Broome, where you’ll hit the road and journey approximately 220 kilometres east to the historic town of Derby. Stop for a morning tea and take some time to explore before continuing your journey along the iconic Gibb River Road, where rugged landscapes, ancient gorges and unforgettable outback experiences await in the heart of the Kimberley.

Day 1

Broome to Birdwood Downs Station

228kms

Begin your Kimberley adventure in Broome, where the outback meets the coast and the legendary Gibb River Road begins. Now is a great time to stock up on supplies for the next 7 days before making the short drive to Birdwood Downs Station, a working cattle station just outside Derby and the perfect place to ease into the rhythm of station life. On the way, stop by Derby to view sculptures on the Marsh and the large prison Boab Tree and if time permits, check out the Mowanjum Art and Culture Centre on your way to Birdwood Downs Station.

Settle into your accommodation or campsite before spending the afternoon exploring the property and enjoying the wide-open surrounds. Birdwood Downs has a range of accommodation and camping options so there is something to suit everyone. As the Kimberley heat begins to fade, find a spot to watch the changing colours of the landscape, cook up dinner and enjoy your first evening beneath the outback sky.

Day 2

Birdwood Downs to Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge

223km

Wake to the sounds of station life and cook up a BBQ breakfast before setting off along the Gibb River Road towards Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge. Today’s journey takes you deeper into the heart of West Kimberley, where open pastoral country gives way to rugged ranges and vast wilderness.

After checking in, spend the afternoon exploring the lodge. Stretch your legs on one of the nearby walking trails or cool off with a swim at Barker Pool before returning to the lodge. As evening settles over the Wunaamin Range, enjoy dinner and a drink before heading outside to take in the star-filled Kimberley sky. Settle in for a good night’s rest, with a full day of exploring Mount Hart’s spectacular wilderness ahead tomorrow.

Day 3

Explore Mount Hart

With a full day at Mount Hart, it’s time to discover more of the spectacular wilderness surrounding the lodge.

Explore by 4WD, on foot or from the air, with experiences ranging from guided adventures into remote gorges and secluded swimming holes to scenic helicopter flights showcasing the Kimberley from above. Depending on your chosen adventure, discover some of the region’s most remarkable landscapes, including Winjana Gorge, Tunnel Creek and Charnley River Gorge.

Pack your swimmers and spend the day exploring walking trails, cooling off in natural waterholes or simply enjoying the peaceful surrounds of the lodge. For an unforgettable perspective, take to the skies on a scenic flight or helicopter experience, with opportunities to see the rugged Wunaamin Range, Horizontal Falls and the spectacular islands and turquoise waters of the Buccaneer Archipelago from above.

Return to Mount Hart in the afternoon and settle in for another relaxed evening surrounded by the Kimberley wilderness.

Day 4

Mount Hart to Elizbeth Station

232kms

Enjoy an early breakfast at Mount Hart before making your way back to the iconic Gibb River Road for the journey to Mt Elizabeth Station. Along the way, stop to explore the picturesque Galvans Gorge, or pack a picnic and take a refreshing break at Manning Gorge before continuing to your next station stay

Set across vast stretches of the Kimberley, Mt Elizabeth Station is a working cattle station where guests can experience life on the land while using the homestead as a base for exploring some of the region’s natural beauty. Spanning more than half a million acres and home to thousands of cattle, the station is operated by the Burton family, long-standing Kimberley pastoralists with deep connections to the region.

Arrive in the afternoon and settle into your accommodation or campsite. After a few days on the road, spend the rest of the day at a slower pace. As the sun begins to set, return to the station and settle in for an evening surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Kimberley.

Day 5

Explore Mt Elizabeth Station

Today is all about discovering the landscapes hidden within Mt Elizabeth Station.

Set out for Wunnamurra Gorge, where the journey is just as much a part of the adventure as the destination. Follow the station’s rugged tracks before continuing on foot into the gorge, where rocky  ridges, freshwater pools and a waterfall provide a spectacular reward.

Alternatively, head to Warla Gorge, also known as Hann River Gorge or “The Beach”. With sandy riverbanks, shady trees and inviting pools, it’s an ideal place to slow down, enjoy a picnic and spend a few hours swimming and relaxing.

Make your way back to the homestead in the afternoon and enjoy your final evening at Mt Elizabeth Station. Settle in for a relaxed dining experience at the licensed Station Restaurant, where the station’s own premium Burton Beef takes centre stage. Alternatively, if travelling in June or July, why not dine beneath the stars at the exclusive Chef’s Table, where exceptional food, open skies and genuine Kimberley hospitality come together. Round off the evening sharing stories from the day’s adventures around the communal firepit.

Day 6

Mt Elizabeth Station to Birdwood Downs

357km

Enjoy one last morning in the heart of the Kimberley before beginning your journey west along the Gibb River Road. Pack up and hit the road early to allow plenty of time to explore the incredible Bell Gorge. A perfect stop between the two stations, enjoy a scenic walk through the rugged landscape before cooling off with a refreshing swim beneath the gorge’s cascading waterfalls. Continue your journey along the iconic Gibb River Road, taking in the changing Kimberley landscapes as you make your way to Birdwood Downs Station.

Arrive back at Birdwood Downs Station in the afternoon and settle in for your final station stay. After a week of dusty roads, gorge walks and outback adventures, spend the afternoon relaxing beneath the trees and soaking up the slower pace of station life.

As the sun sets on your final evening, pick up some of the station’s own premium Burton Beef, fire up the barbecue and enjoy a relaxed dinner beneath the stars. Gather around the campfire afterwards to share stories from your travels, the perfect way to finish your Kimberley station adventure.

Day 7

Birdwood Downs to Broome

228kms

Wake to your final morning in station country and enjoy a leisurely start to the day before beginning your journey back to Broome. If you didn’t have the chance to explore Derby at the start of your adventure, consider stopping on your return journey to discover more of this historic Kimberley town.
